When people compare PCD companies, they usually look at rates and monopoly terms first. Both matter. But after years of working with franchise partners, we would argue that the product portfolio, meaning the full range you carry and how it fits together, has more effect on how your business grows than either of them.
Here is why.
One visit, many prescriptions
Every doctor visit costs you time, fuel and effort. If you have only two or three products to talk about, the most you can come away with is two or three prescriptions. A balanced portfolio means each visit can cover several products the same doctor uses: an antibiotic, a gastro product, a pain reliever, a multivitamin.
The visit costs the same either way. The return is very different.
Different doctors, different needs
Your area has general physicians, paediatricians, gynaecologists, orthopaedic surgeons and dentists. Each prescribes a different set of products. A portfolio that covers several specialities lets you work with more doctors along the same route, instead of skipping clinics because you have nothing relevant to offer.
This is why a good range usually spans several dosage forms. Tablets and capsules for adults, syrups and drops for children, and injections where clinics use them. Nutraceuticals and Ayurvedic products are becoming an important part of many ranges too.
Chemists prefer fewer, broader suppliers
A chemist would much rather reorder fifteen products from you than one product each from fifteen different people. A broad, dependable portfolio makes you a regular supplier rather than an occasional one. That means better shelf placement, faster payments and a relationship that holds up when a competitor walks in.
Less risk from any single product
Relying on a few products is risky. A price change, a supply gap or a new competitor can hit your income overnight. With a wider portfolio, a slow month for one product is balanced out by others. Seasonal swings level out the same way: when cough syrups slow down after winter, other categories keep the business moving.
Room to grow without changing partners
As your business matures, you will want to add products: a new speciality, a new doctor network, a new town. If your company’s range is deep enough, you can grow without bringing in a second or third company and juggling separate terms, orders and dispatches.
What “good” looks like
A bigger list is not automatically a better one. When you look at a company’s portfolio, check for:
- Coverage of everyday therapeutic segments, such as antibiotics, gastro, pain and inflammation, respiratory, vitamins and supplements, along with any specialities you plan to target.
- Accepted compositions that doctors already prescribe, not unusual combinations that need hard selling.
- Several dosage forms, so you can serve both adult and paediatric prescriptions.
- Consistent availability. A product that is often out of stock isn’t really part of your portfolio.
- Regular additions, which show the company keeps up with prescribing trends.
Build it in stages
You don’t need to carry the whole range from day one. Most successful partners start with a focused core of products for the doctors they already reach, then widen the range as relationships grow. The value of a strong portfolio is that the room to grow is already there when you need it.
Healthkey Life Sciences offers a range across tablets, capsules, syrups and suspensions, injections, nutraceuticals and Ayurvedic/herbal products. If you want to see how our portfolio could fit your area, ask for the product list and we will help you pick a starting set.
